Petroleum credit card processing from the pump to the register.

Petroleum credit card processing is its own world. Pay-at-the-pump authorizations, fuel networks, fleet cards and a convenience store inside, all on thin fuel margins. We set up stations and C-stores to handle both sides of the lot.

Why fuel sites are hard to price

A station sells fuel at the pump and snacks inside, and each side runs on different equipment and different card costs. Here is where we see stations overpay or get stuck.

What you often find

  • A general-purpose processor that doesn’t know fuel
  • Pump and store payments on separate, mismatched accounts
  • Fleet cards declined because nobody checked the network
  • Fuel margins eaten by bundled processing rates
  • Long hold times when the pump stops taking cards

At PayZoom

  • Setup on fuel networks PayZoom has worked with
  • Pump and store sales reported together
  • Card acceptance, including fleet cards, checked up front
  • Interchange passed at cost with our margin shown
  • A real person answers when something breaks

How a fuel site gets paid

A station’s payment setup has three parts that have to talk to each other. We plan them together so the pump and the register settle as one business.

The pump

Outdoor terminals that authorize the card before fueling and finish the sale when the nozzle hangs up.

The store

A C-store POS or countertop terminal for drinks, snacks and everything inside.

The network

The fuel processing network that connects both, matched to your brand and equipment.

The PayZoom Statement Review

  1. Send. Email us one recent processing statement.
  2. Read. We line-item every fee and separate what the card networks charge from what your processor keeps.
  3. Recommend. You get a plain-English answer. If you are already paying a fair price, we will tell you.
  4. Switch. If you move to PayZoom, we set up processing to fit your POS, gateway or cart.

Not only did PayZoom lower our costs, they analyzed our internal processes and made recommendations to improve workflow and provided new equipment so we could capture electronic payments at all points in the hospital and at off-site locations.

Questions merchants ask us

Straight answers. If yours is not here, call us and a real person will answer it.

How does pay at the pump work?

When a customer inserts or taps a card at the pump, the system sends an authorization for an estimated amount before fuel flows. When fueling ends, the sale finishes for the actual amount pumped. That is why customers sometimes see a temporary hold. Your forecourt equipment and fuel network handle this, so we make sure they are set up correctly.

Which fuel networks do you work with?

PayZoom has worked with platforms including Worldpay Fuel Network, Petroleum Card Services and Buypass. The right network depends on your fuel brand, your POS and your forecourt equipment. We look at what your site runs today and tell you plainly what fits and what it would cost.

Can the C-store and the pumps share one account?

In many setups, yes, or at least one view of both. Pump sales and in-store sales often run through the same site controller or POS, which makes combined reporting possible. Where they must stay separate, we still line up the reports so you can see the whole station’s card activity.

Do you handle fleet cards?

Fleet card acceptance depends on your fuel network and equipment, and each fleet card has its own rules. We check which fleet cards your setup can take before you switch, so drivers aren’t turned away at the pump. Tell us which fleets your customers use and we will confirm what fits.

Can a fuel station use a cash discount program?

Many stations already post separate cash and credit prices, and a cash discount program can formalize that. The rules for posting prices and signs matter, and some states have their own requirements. We help you review current rules before you start. See our cash discount page for how it works.

Send us one statement. We’ll tell you exactly what you’re paying.

No cost and no pressure. If your current rate is fair, we’ll say so. We typically reply the same business day.
