Grocery credit card processing built for busy lanes.
Grocery credit card processing is a volume game. Thousands of small tickets, a lot of debit, and margins measured in pennies. A fraction of a cent per transaction adds up fast, so we price it line by line and keep the lanes moving.
What matters in a grocery lane
| Ticket count | High |
| Average ticket | Often small |
| Card mix | Heavy debit |
| Checkout speed | Tap, chip, IP |
| Per-item fees | Priced line by line |
Debit and credit cost differently. Your mix shapes your total cost.
Why grocers feel every cent
When you run thousands of transactions a week, a per-item fee that looks tiny on paper becomes a real number. These are the issues we see most on grocery statements.
What you often find
- Debit transactions priced like credit
- A per-item fee nobody looked at since setup
- Slow terminals that back up the lanes on Saturday
- Bundled pricing that hides the processor’s cut
- Separate reports for every lane and store
At PayZoom
- Debit passed through at its real, lower interchange cost
- Per-transaction fees shown and reviewed with you
- Fast tap, chip and IP checkout at every lane
- Interchange-Plus pricing with our margin in writing
- One view across lanes and locations
How grocery processing stays lean
For a grocer, three numbers decide the total: the card mix, the per-item fee and the speed of each lane. We work on all three.
Your card mix
Debit, credit and rewards cards each carry a different interchange cost, passed through at cost.
Per-item fees
The small fixed fee per transaction, which matters most when tickets are small and frequent.
Lane speed
Fast terminals and POS connections so card payments never become the bottleneck.
The PayZoom Statement Review
- Send. Email us one recent processing statement.
- Read. We line-item every fee and separate what the card networks charge from what your processor keeps.
- Recommend. You get a plain-English answer. If you are already paying a fair price, we will tell you.
- Switch. If you move to PayZoom, we set up processing to fit your POS, gateway or cart.
Not only did PayZoom lower our costs, they analyzed our internal processes and made recommendations to improve workflow and provided new equipment so we could capture electronic payments at all points in the hospital and at off-site locations.

Questions merchants ask us
Straight answers. If yours is not here, call us and a real person will answer it.
Why does debit matter so much for grocery stores?
Grocery customers use debit cards heavily, and many debit cards carry lower interchange than credit cards. If your pricing treats debit like credit, you overpay on a large share of your sales. With Interchange-Plus, the actual debit cost passes through, so you pay the lower rate when it applies. We check this first on every grocery statement.
What is a per-item fee, and why does it matter?
It is the fixed amount charged on every transaction, separate from the percentage. On a large ticket it barely registers. On a small grocery ticket it can be a big share of the cost. Because grocers run so many small transactions, we look closely at this fee and show it on its own line.
Can you help speed up our checkout lanes?
Yes. Faster terminals and IP connections cut the wait at each lane, and contactless tap is quicker than inserting a chip card. We look at what you run today and suggest equipment or POS connections that fit. Faster card payments mean shorter lines at the busiest hours.
Do you work with grocery POS systems?
We set up processing to fit the POS you already run where it is supported, and we don’t sell a proprietary POS. Grocery systems often tie into scales, scanners and inventory, so we work with what you have rather than asking you to rip it out. Send a statement and tell us what you run.
Do you work with food processing and cold storage businesses too?
Yes. Along with grocery stores, PayZoom has worked with food processing and cold storage businesses. Those companies often sell to other businesses and get paid by invoice, so ACH and Level 2 and Level 3 processing can matter more than lane speed. We set up each one around how it gets paid.
Send us one statement. We’ll tell you exactly what you’re paying.
No cost and no pressure. If your current rate is fair, we’ll say so. We typically reply the same business day.
